Preparing Your Car for Emergencies

The fastest way to realize how unprepared you are for an emergency is to find yourself stuck in one. You protect your self for financial emergencies with a savings account, fill your home with safety detectors and fire extinguishers, and get medical insurance for any illness.

But what if an emergency happens while you are driving? Shouldn’t you stock your car with things you will need in case of an accident, blowout, or some other vehicle issue? Brookwood Automotive wants to make sure you are prepared for any situation with this list of emergency items that are just for your car.

First Aid Kit

A well-prepped first aid kit can help you with anything from motion sickness to accident injuries. Make sure your kit contains a variety of bandage sizes, alcohol wipes, burn cream, and anti-nausea medication like Dramamine. We also recommend that you include safety gloves and gauze.

Jumper Cables or a Jump Starter

You get into your parked car, turn the key, and realize your battery is dead. This is not a fun situation. Then add on the process of having to find a good samaritan who also has jumper cables and it just turns into a bad day. If you have a portable jump starter, you can jump your battery and get your car to the shop all by yourself. Btu jump starters can be pricey. At the very least, we advise that you have a good set of jumper cables in your car. Then at least you will have one part of the jump start equation.

Spare Tire, Lug Wrench, and Jack

A flat tire is an inconvenience, but it doesn’t have to completely ruin your day. Make sure you know the location of your lug wrench and jack before you hit the road. As for the spare tire, have it inspected to verify that it is road-ready and safe. It is also a good idea to know how to change a tire so you don’t have to rely on the kindness and integrity of passing motorists.

Flashlight and Reflective Triangles

Breaking down on the side of the road, especially a busy highway, puts you in a dangerous position. Reflective triangles or road flares will alert other drivers to your presence. As for the flashlight, that should go without saving. Remember to also have extra batteries on hand.

Now that your car is stocked with emergency supplies don’t forget to get a vehicle inspection on the car itself. For your next inspection, service, or repair appointment call Brookwood Automotive. We are proud the be the full-service auto repair shop that OKC drivers trust most.
